What? A course all about The Lord of the Rings??? Hobbits, Orcs, wizards, dashing knights, and powerful elves are all part of the magic created in J.R.R. Tolkien’s famously epic tale, The Lord of the Rings. For years, the vivid characters within this beloved story could exist only in the readers’ minds—until it was adapted into a movie that allowed fans to finally see, through the eyes of Hollywood magic and brilliant technology, the manifestation of these characters onscreen. What does it take to transport these well-known images like Gollum and the Shire from dusty pages to the giant screen? In The Lord of the Rings: An Exploration of the Films & Its Literary Influences, you will see first-hand how classic literature can become modern film and bring the fantasy alive for a whole new generation of believers.

Digital Photography
Awhile back we were blogging about courses. We want to return to sharing more information about our courses. Here we are introducing Digital Photograpy. Students interested in attending a California college this may be a good choice as they require a full year of the same fine arts.
Digital Photography I: Creating Images with Impact!
Have you ever wondered how professional photographers manage to take such sensational pictures? How are they able to find just the right way to capture an image or moment in time? Perhaps you’ve even wondered why your own pictures don’t meet that standard. Digital Photography I: Creating Images with Impact! will answer these questions and help you understand more about the basics of photography. Learning about aperture, shutter speed, lighting, and composition is key for any serious photographer and will help you gain the confidence and knowledge you need to become one. You will not only follow photography through its history but also gain a basic understanding of camera functions, techniques and what it takes to shoot quality portraits, close-ups, action shots, and landscapes.
This course pairs well with this companion courses:
Digital Photography II: Discovering Your Creative Potential
In today’s world, we are surrounded by images. We are continually seeing photographs as they appear in advertisements, on websites, in magazines, and on billboards; they even adorn our walls at home. While many of these images have been created by professional photographers, it is possible for your photos to take on a more professional look after you discover how to increase your creative potential. In Digital Photography II: Discovering Your Creative Potential, you will examine various aspects of the field including specialty areas, ethics, and famous photographers throughout history. You will also learn how to effectively critique photographs so you can better understand composition and go on to create more eye-catching photographs on your own.
What the heck is RAMP Up?
RAMP Up – Reading And Math Proficiency UP
“This is kinda fun!” – A sixth grade RAMP Up student
So why would a student struggling in reading or math want to read more or do another math problem? To experience success is the short answer. The longer answer is that filling gaps in skills and knowledge now can help a student now, next year, and potentially for a lifetime.
As much as we want our classrooms to meet each child’s needs, the diversity of abilities are too great. Teachers and students run on a treadmill and those that struggle find school difficult and discouraging. Regularly, I talk with students who feel discouraged and that just want some success in school. This is the reason we created RAMP Up- to build skills that lead to confidence, hope, and maybe even joy. But, this program does more. It also creates motivation that is based on improvement.
A New Way. We live in times when student’s interests and gaming are blending together to benefit learning through online tools. RAMP Up is designed to give students and parents resources that school districts may use with students that qualify for additional help under special funding. We designed this online program with the same tools that motivate, instruct, and engage students. Providing students with happy learning time is our goal! Changing lives is our purpose.
Simple to start. Minutes per day. After a student enrolls in RAMP-Up, we setup his or her account with their grade and approximate performance level, and the program starts to examine the skills and accuracy of the student. As more time is spent in the program, it starts to hone in on missing skills or competencies of the student and creates an intentional learning pathway individualized for each person.
While we recommend 20-30 minutes per day, 2-5 days per week depending on the ability level of the student, there is flexibility. Adding additional stress can be counter-productive. If a student spends the recommended time, most students achieve a significant gain in four to six months.
Teacher Support. RAMP Up tools are savvy and guide students through the content, but this cannot replace the role of also having the watchful eye of a teacher. Our certificated teachers will be monitoring a student’s progress and when needed, can give students specific lessons that target an area of weakness. They will also be sending out monthly reports to keep parents informed.
Replacing a Tutor? Maybe. In my three decades of teaching, I have seen many students stumble over new learning because there is a hole in their knowledge. Fill the gap and the new information makes sense especially for math. Reading speed and competency can impact every subject, and even average or above can benefit from RAMP Up.
On a personal level, I am motivated to help those of us that struggle. I am dyslexic and have struggled with reading efficiency and writing. Even in my doctoral work, I am never free from my continual battles, and if I can help a student gain skills and confidence, it can spare them some of the blood, sweat, and tears I have endured.
The struggling student is dear to my heart, and I ask you to consider helping them now especially as State testing approaches.
