Online Learning Tips

Online learning can work really well in high school—but only if you’re intentional about how you approach it. Here are practical tips that actually make a difference:

1. Treat it like real school (because it is)

It’s easy to get too casual at home. Set a daily start time, get dressed, and sit at a dedicated workspace. Your brain performs better with routine.

2. Use a simple system to stay organized

Keep track of assignments and deadlines in one place like a digital or paper planner. Use apps like Google Calendar or Notion. Break big assignments into smaller tasks so you don’t procrastinate.

3. Study in short, focused bursts

Try working for 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break. Repeat that 3-4 times, then take a longer break. This helps prevent burnout and keeps your attention sharp.

4. Control distractions

Your biggest enemy is usually your phone. Put it in another room while studying. If using a computer, close unnecessary tabs or use full-screen mode during lessons.

5. Don’t just watch—engage

Passive learning doesn’t stick. Instead, take notes in your own words. Pause videos and summarize. Ask yourself questions like “Why does this work?”

6. Ask for help early

If you don’t understand something, email your teacher. Or, join class discussion boards, and study with classmates (even over Zoom or FaceTime). Waiting too long makes everything harder.

7. Stay socially connected

Online school can feel isolating. Make time to talk with friends, join clubs, sports, or online communities, and work with classmates when possible.

8. Protect your energy

Sleep and health matter more than you think! Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep. Take real breaks (not just scrolling). Move your body daily.

9. Find your best learning style

Experiment with watching videos vs. reading. Writing notes vs. typing. Studying alone vs. with others. Everyone learns differently—figure out what works for you.

10. Set small, clear goals

Instead of “study biology,” say, “Finish chapter 3 notes,” or, “Complete 10 math problems.” Small wins keep you motivated.
