Let’s talk about labs in science. The state of Washington requires 3 years of science to graduate from high school. Two of those years need to be lab science. The question becomes “how the heck do we do labs in an online course?” That is a fantastic question! We use Apex curriculum for many of our science courses. The wonderful thing is they give a two lab options – a wet lab and a dry lab. What does that mean? A wet lab is a hand’s on lab where students are provided a list of materials needed. Students then perform the experiment themselves at home. Please note Market Square Education does not provide any of the materials. The second option is a dry lab. Dry labs provide all of the data you would collect from doing the experiment. Think about watching someone do the experiment and all you do is write down the data. That’s what a dry lab is like.
Once enrolled in a science course, students find the dry lab information on the page after the wet lab materials. Often times students call me after reading the wet lab information but before the click on the next button. (hint: click on that next button and read all about dry labs on the next page!)
Market Square Education offers a variety of lab sciences:
- Physical Science
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Earth Science
- AP Environmental Science
- AP Biology
- AP Chemistry
Please note that all AP courses require hands-on wet labs. There is an additional fee to purchase the materials from a third party provider.
